Arrived June 2010, Mike was 2 years old when his mother, according to social workers, had become a threat to his safety. There was strong evidence that she planned to harm him, wanting to be done with the responsibility of motherhood. She was very young and had been on and off the streets, in and out of street kid programs for six or seven years. It was a horrible experience to drive out of the Children’s Office parking lot, holding tightly to Mike as he clawed at the window, trying to get out of the car. He was screaming for his mother, and she was laughing at him! He loves his mom so much! He had absolutely no idea the fate that would await him if he was left with her.

Mike is a quiet boy, who likes to play outside, but tends to play by himself a lot. He never passes up chance to be snuggled!

Arrived May 2010, Meredith was brought to us at the same time as Gloria. She was about 3 months old and was left near the Catholic church in Kitale. Someone walking past the church first thing in the morning heard a baby crying and followed the sound to find a beautiful baby girl. She was dressed in a thin, worn out dress and wrapped in a shawl. She didn’t have a nappy (diaper) on and smelled like a kitchen fire. We named her for a good friend of ours in Kitale. The baby’s full name is Meredith Laini (Laini is a Swahili word used to describe a gentle, tender-hearted person). She a happy, healthy and growing.

Arrived September 2010, Mark Mjasiri was about a week old when he was found in a maize field not far from RMISF. He was a healthy, seemingly normal baby, with a big appetite and a beautiful head of curls. Mark loves to be held and played with.

On a side note, we have a little tradition here at RMISF – In Step Childrens Home: When a baby comes while a visitor is here, we often name the baby after the visitor. Mark arrived while Carla’s nephew, Brian, was there, but we already have two Brians. Carla’s sister (Brian’s mom) suggested naming him after the meaning of “Brian”, which is “courage”. Mjasiri is the Swahili word for “courage”.

Arrived May 2010, Darin was approximately 11 months old at the time. He was abandoned in the forest and found by a lady who took him to the police station, then he was placed here with us. He seems to be a normal but sad little boy who loves to be held and snuggled.

Arrived June 2007, Moses was approximately 1 year old when he was found near a borehole where lots of women come to collect water. He was fairly healthy and very sociable, not the typical abandoned child.  It has been speculated that possibly something happened to his mother as she was going for water.
